The Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) has Handed Over a new Information and Communication Centre (ICT) project tagged “Emerging Technologies Centre” (ETC) to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH) in Igbesa, Ogun State.
The newly established centre is outfitted with 100 desktop computers, advanced emerging technology applications, robust bandwidth and connectivity tools to support both students and faculty members. OGITECH, with a student capacity of 9,300, is recognized as a leading institution of technology in Nigeria.
The Secretary, Universal Service Provision Secretariat, Mr. Yomi Arowosafe stated that the ETC is designed to serve as a platform for digital innovation, research, and development (R&D) to drive Nigeria’s economic growth. Powered by solar energy, the centre is seen as a long-term investment in the future of Ogun State and Nigeria
He highlighted the USPF’s mandate, under the leadership of the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, to provide ICT access to unserved and underserved communities across Nigeria.
Arowosafe noted that the USPF has implemented various access and connectivity projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, positively impacting ICT utilisation and deepening connectivity.
The handover ceremony also featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure the effective utilisation and sustainability of the project.
Lastly, the Secretary expressed pride in partnering with OGITECH on the project, noting the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure its continued success and sustainability.
The Rector of OGITECH, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, lauded the NCC and the USPF team for siting the project in the Institute, promising that the project will be put into effective utilisation to benefit not only the Institute but its entire community.
He also expressed commitment towards ensuring the sustainability of the project, as has been articulated in the joint MoU between the OGITECH and the USPF.
The Hand Over of the ETC marks a significant milestone in the Nigerian government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote digital inclusion across the country.
