Mr. Yomi Arowosafe, Secretary of the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) praised the collaboration between the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (UK FCDO) with the Nigerian government, as they work to enhance rural connectivity for Nigeria’s socio-economic development. This commendation was delivered at an Industry-Focused Stakeholders Engagement Session held in Lagos on March 13, 2025 organized by the USPF in collaboration with the UK FCDO and ITU.

Arowosafe emphasized that the theme of the workshop, “Fostering Connectivity in Unserved and Underserved Communities: Collaborating for Sustainable Growth” perfectly captured the Federal Government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide which also aligns with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy’s Strategic Blueprint and the Nigerian Communications Commission’s Strategic Focus Areas. He also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the USPF to expand network connectivity in unserved and underserved communities across Nigeria. The event showcased how stakeholder collaboration is
essential for the realization of this objective.

Prior to the session, the USPF had sought input from stakeholders through questionnaires, and their feedback played a crucial role in shaping panel discussions, focusing on strategies to foster connectivity through collaboration and partnerships, strengthen capacity building and security, and explore innovative funding mechanisms for sustainable connectivity. Arowosafe stated that the engagement provided a platform for constructive dialogue, helping to identify solutions to unique challenges and contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, ultimately improving the lives of its citizens.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Permanent Secretary of Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Faruk Yabo, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida; Idongesit Udo of FCDO, Ali Drissa Badiel of ITU West Africa, Chief Executives of telecommunications companies, State ICT commissioners, notable industry players, trade associations, development partners, key speakers and staff of both NCC and the USPF.

The Honourable. Minister who spoke on the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to provide policy direction and initiatives aimed at expanding connectivity across Nigeria, which will drive the nation’s socio-economic development.

Dr. Maida while addressing the audience reiterated the Commission’s commitment to supporting all USPF projects through effective regulatory measures that help in accelerating the deployment of digital infrastructure necessary to achieve the Federal Government’s priority areas and ministerial blueprint.

In conclusion, Arowosafe stated that the event marks the beginning of a collective journey towards a more connected, inclusive, and prosperous Nigeria and stated that USPF is proud to lead the effort, and look forward to what we can accomplish together.”
